What Are The Most Common Neurological Disorders?

  1. Strokes: A sudden stroke attack occurs when the blood flow to the brain stops which further damages the brain cells. There are two kinds of stroke attacks, Hemorrhagic and Ischemic. They are caused due to blood clots or blocking of the blood vessel.
  2. Migraine: It is characterized as a chronic neurological disorder where the patient complains of frequent headaches. Intensity of the headaches can be moderate to severe and often last for two days or more
  3. Brain tumor: Such tumors are the result of the rapid growth of abnormal cells in the brain tissues. Brain tumors can either be malignant i.e. cancerous or benign.
  4. Multiple sclerosis: This disease affects the brain and spinal cord nerve cells which are integral for the proper functioning of the nervous system. The damage done to the myelin sheath or protective layer surrounding the nerve cells affects the brain.
  5. Spinal cord disorder: Injuries are one of the prevailing reasons for spinal cord disorders. Some other reasons include blocked blood supply, compressions of the spinal cord by a tumor or fractured bone and infections.

What Are The Most Common Symptoms?

The signs & symptoms of neurological disorders can vary significantly, depending upon the type of disorder as well as the specific area of the body that is affected. The most common symptoms are:

  • Partial or complete paralysis
  • Muscle weakness
  • Partial or complete loss of sensation
  • Seizures
  • Difficulty reading and writing
  • Poor cognitive abilities
  • Unexplained pain
  • Decreased alertness

What Are The Risk Factors?

The risk factors of such disorders can be quite diverse. Both the spinal cord and brain are insulated by numerous membranes that can be vulnerable to force and pressure. The peripheral nerves located deep under the skin can also be vulnerable to damage. Neurological disorders can affect an entire neurological pathway or a single neuron. Even a small disturbance to a neuron’s structural pathway can result in dysfunction. As a result, neurological disorders can result from a number of causes, including:

  • Lifestyle-related factors
  • Infections
  • Genetic factors
  • Nutrition-related factors
  • Environmental influences
  • Physical injuries

Treatment of headaches

If you come to us with a headache. We first exclude any secondary reasons for headaches before going for treatment of headaches. We use a multi-disciplinary approach where we would use the specialty of several doctors to come up with the right diagnosis. We start with eliminating any secondary reasons. Such as excluding reasons for headaches such as vision or psychological issues.

  1. Lifestyle modifications like dietary assessment, sleep hygiene, exercise
  2. Education about headache
  3. Cognitive behavior therapy

There are updated treatments for headaches. The treatment is individualized based on the patients needs.

  1. Botox: the injection of 31 botox injections in different areas of the head to control the headache. It has been going for 10 years and is a safe method of treating headaches.
  2. Monoclonal antibodies. This is a new treatment where we do a once a month injection for the treatment of migraine headaches
  3. Sphinopalatinenganglion treatment for headaches is basically a catheter applied in the nose which blocks the nerve which controls headaches and has been used with many patients with success.

Memory problems

We do a clinical neurological assessment and patient history and then provide a memory test to find if there is a memory problem or not. Most common causes:

  1. Anxiety which they would benefit from relaxation techniques and stress reduction techniques
  2. Some medications could be causing memory problems
  3. Neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimers and parkinsons
  4. We also do a blood test to eliminate vitamin and mineral deficiencies. We would then provide imaging to see if there is brain atrophy, stroke, or tumor if required.

Neuromuscular pain

Many people come in with neck and back pain with possible numbness and tingling in different areas also including burning pain and they come in for an assesment to see if nerves are involved in the process. We provide a clinical assessment and nerve connection studies to discover if this is a nerve problem, muscle problem, or root problem.

We do the nerve connection studies in the clinic which basically means a test where we stimulate the nerve and check how fast it runs.

If is a nerve problem is diagnosed, depending on what type of nerve problem it is we provide the appropriate treatment such as medications. If it is a compressive cause, we avoid maneuvers causing compression of the nerve. At times we must do a referral to consider surgical release of the suspected nerve.
